Sinus Lifting
In surgery, sinus lift is also called a Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation. The goal of a sinus lift is to increase the amount of bone support in the upper jaw by lifting the sinus membranes and inserting a bone graft (granules of artificial or real bone) there.
Before placing any Dental Implants in your mouth, our Dentists will require you to have a specialized CBCT scan (‘CT Scan’).
The CT scan reveals the exact location of the Sinus cavities, showing whether or not a Sinus Lift is required before the placement of a Dental Implant. This procedure may be required on one or both sides of the upper jaw in some patients depending on the level of the Sinus, as seen on your CT scan.
How does a sinus lift work?
There are two traditional methods for gaining access to the sinus cavity and elevating the membrane to place the bone graft material.
- Lifting of the Crestal Sinus
- Sinus Lift for Lateral Windows
The principle is the same in both techniques: a small incision through the mucosa (gums) allows access to the remaining upper jaw bone. The bone graft is placed after a window is created in this bone and the membrane inside the maxillary air sinus is elevated.
Sinus lift surgery
We will perform a thorough examination of your dentition (teeth) and take digital radiographs (X-rays) before the procedure, including an OPG (orthopantomogram) and a 3D Cone Beam CT scan. This will allow us to examine the anatomy of your jaw and sinuses, as well as accurately measure the height and width of your existing bone.
What it involves
- A small “window” is made in the upper jawbone and pushed up to reveal the sinus cavity.
- The sinus membrane (floor) is gently ‘lifted’ away from your jaw until the ideal jaw height is achieved.
- The empty space is then filled with bone graft material.
- Once the new bone is in place, the gum tissue is stitched closed and allowed to heal.
Some patients will not require Sinus Lifts at all; this varies from person to person, but it is considered before any Dental Implants to replace Upper Teeth are placed.
